They're definitely different from the book, but it's definitely a different medium. I'm adopting a wait and see attitude. See below for thoughts on Zak Snyder as director
I'm cautiously pessimistic. Hollywood has trouble bringing simplistic stories like Spider-Man to the big screen; I'm dubious about its ability to pull off something as complex and character-driven as Watchmen.
But I bet it'll look purty.
EDIT: I just looked at the pictures.
*sigh*
I see we're going the X-Men skin-tight-vinyl route with the costumes. Alas.
(I apologize. I should probably be bringing this up in my own space.)
See, I like the first two Spider-man films. I liked the first two X-men films and parts of the third.
I was more worried by the fact that it's directed by Zak Snyder of 300 fame, until I realized that most of the aspects of that film that I hated most (homophobia, gynophobia, disability-phobia, etc)were from the source material by Frank Miller. Maybe Snyder will find a way to adapt this as thematically faithfully.
Well, now.... THIS. IS. SPARTA. we're talking about. :-)
I know there was a stink raised over the "boy-lovers" line, but that was a dig at Athenian pederasty, not homosexuality in general. From my understanding, it was a classic insult back then, the implication being that Athenians were so weak that they couldn't even love their women; they had to go after little boys.
I'm talking more about how the Spartans were all wholesome, white heteros and the Persians were all dark skinned sexual deviants. Plus, the traitor was recast as a deformed, disabled man, when all historical accounts show him as being neither. The implication being that when the Spartans pitched the physically imperfect babies off the cliff, they were justified because they were just going to grow up to be evil anyway, because physically imperfect = evil.
There are just way too many icky subtext things in that movie for my taste.
