eric_mathgeek 's questions and the answers:
1. I know you're disabled, but I'm not sure exactly what that means for you. What is your disability?
In 2000, I was diagnosed with a rare soft tissue cancer in my left knee. They had to remove the joint and replace it with a prosthetic one. I also lost about thirty percent of my quad muscle. It saved my leg, but it doesn't work as well. There have been a few complications and the leg is now about an inch or two shorter than the right. I walk with an elbow crutch. Due to metastasis in my lungs, I lost the lower left lobe, so I have a lung and a half.
2. What's your favorite science fiction story -- in any medium, movie, tv show, book, whatever?
Wow. I don't know if I could narrow it down. I am a major fan of the new Doctor Who series and its spinoffs. I loved Star Trek (DS9 was my fave) and Star Wars (the original trilogy) As for fiction, I loved Dan Simmons' Hyperion series, Robert Heinlein's latest novels made a huge impact on me (Friday, Stranger in a Strange Land, Time Enough for Love)
3. How is the new season of Heroes grabbing you?
I haven't watched it. I loved the first season and then last year, felt totally fucked over. I didn't even watch the last few episodes of last season. Can't be botherd and from what I've read of the plotlines and "twists" of this year, I'm not missing it at all.
4. What's your favorite thing about Toronto? (How did I end up with so many Torontoians -- what's the correct word? -- on my list? Sorry, not really a question for you, just wondering. ;)
It's Torontonians ;) I love the energy of this city, the lights and the neighbourhoods and the multiculturalism. I come from Saskatchewan, which is sort of like Iowa or some other midwestern state. Grew up very white. I guess the big thing is how much I've blossomed creatively here. I wrote my cancer book here, I sold some short stories, I've had an art show and I'm painting. I feel more whole here
5. So, how *are* you defying gravity?
I've always kind of been the quintessential square peg in a round hole, wandering off on my own path that no one else seems to be on. Always seem to be the one that never matches anyone else. And I also like the other meaning of gravity in terms of seriousness or solemnity, defying that as well.

on 2008-10-03 02:03 am (UTC)2. I was a HUGE Heinlein fan in high school. I'm not sure I read Friday, but I definitely read the other two and many others as well. Expanding Universe was an eye-opener for me, especially as a non-political high school student. (Not that I remember much about it, other than "Pravda means truth.") I never read Dan Simmons, and I've seen some of the new Doctor Who but none of the old. SW and ST, love. Though DS9 wasn't my favorite... Voyager was, when it was good.
3. Yep. A friend of mine said, "It feels like I'm watching a sequel to something that shouldn't have a sequel."
4. Cool.
5. If I can push a bit more? How are you defying the seriousness or solemnity?

on 2008-10-03 02:09 am (UTC)Read the Hyperion and Endymion books. Fan-frakkin-tastic.
I work very hard at being positive, being fun and playful and open. I believe in singing in public and laughing too loud and giving lots of love and hugs whenever I can. The world has way too much negative energy in it. It doesn't need any more from me

on 2008-10-04 04:32 pm (UTC)2. My first inclination would be magic but it would probably be a supreme intellect. Because you can accomplish impossible feats with knowledge and wisdom. So maybe get the supreme intellect to learn magic or get the magic to get supreme intellect.
3. Being a double minority provides me with an insight as to common trends and issues that minority issues face in general. Being a visible minority is a burden because no matter how hard I work, how complex or interesting I am as a human being, people can't see past the color of my skin. Being black makes me an outcast in the LGBT community as it is rife with racism. And to quote Jasmyne Cannick, if I have to choose between homophobic blacks and racist gays, I'll take my chances with homophobic blacks.
4. Buy a new stack of comic books hop on my bed, turn on my iPod and just unwind as I read about my favorite superheroes saving the world. I also enjoy editing pictures in Photoshop and Image Ready, that's very relaxing to me for some reason.
5. I would take you to a bookstore or coffee shop just so I can pick your brain and we can gab for hours on end.

on 2008-10-05 08:14 pm (UTC)I honestly don't think I'm even slightly sexy. I just kind of think I'm this aging, pudgy goofball with a limp. I mean, I don't think I'm ugly, but I've never seen myself as sexy. It honestly kind of confuses me when someone says that about me.
That could be part if it, though. I know that when someone is really aware of how sexy they are or people think they are, that's a buzzkill for me. Someone who thinks they're sexy is so not sexy to me
